SAN JOSE, California (June 23, 2011)— The San Jose Museum of Art will offer the art-making program “DIY Art: The Genesis of a Good Comic Book” on Saturday, July 9, 2011, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.  Dan Vado, publisher and editor of Slave Labor Graphics (SLG) Publishing in San Jose, will introduce participants to the comic book form and teach the techniques of creating graphic narratives. Then visitors will lay out their own comic books inspired by their everyday lives. The program is offered in connection with the current exhibition The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb’s Book of Genesis. Admission to “DIY Art” is included with Museum admission of $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and students.  All materials are provided.

Due to the graphic nature of some program content, the July 9 program is recommended for teens and adults. The Museum will present another comic book drawing program that is suitable for children on August 20 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Dan Vado founded Slave Labor Graphics (SLG) Publishing in 1986. The first publisher of such notable comic book artists as Evan Dorkin, Andi Watson and Jhonen Vasquez, SLG is known for discovering and fostering new talent in the comics industry. Titles include It's Science with Dr. Radium by Scott Saavedra, Skeleton Key by Watson, Milk and Cheese and Dork by Dorkin, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac by Vasquez, and Lenore by Roman Dirge. With new comics such as Emo Boy by Steve Emond and Rex Libris by James Turner, SLG has proven its dedication to work that does not conform to easily defined types, genres or expectations.

The Bible Illuminated features 207 original drawings by underground comix legend R. Crumb, who spent five years illustrating all 50 chapters of the Book of Genesis. The exhibition, on view through September 25, 2011, was organized by the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Generous support for the exhibition was provided by Brenda K. Potter. The San Jose exhibition of The Bible Illuminated is sponsored by McManis Faulkner.
