The Museum's acquisitions closely follow the stated mission of the Museum - to collect and exhibit contemporary art and its sources in recent history. We place special emphasis on discovering national and international emerging and under-recognized artists, as well as acquiring the works of key figures in contemporary art. Within that spectrum, the Museum also pays close attention to the West Coast artistic community, which is known worldwide for experimentation and innovation.
SJMA's collecting goals match the broad-based community engagement central to SJMA's mission. A significant connection to the community is derived from SJMA's focus on Bay Area artists and its commitment to include artists of differing ethnic and cultural, as well as stylistic, backgrounds in the collection. In addition, the policy is designed so that work by regional artists in the collection has an historical and global context, appropriate to the international, culturally diverse environment of the Bay Area.
The guidelines for donating artwork to the permanent collection are outlined below for your convenience.
