SAN JOSE, California (July 1, 2013)— The San Jose Museum of Art’s popular after-hours series “ArtRage” continues on Thursday, July 18, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The evening’s theme, “Road Trip,” is inspired by the exhibitions Annie Leibovitz: Pilgrimage, Questions from the Sky: New Work by Hung Liu, and Timelapse: Doug Hall and the Western Landscape. These artists have all used travel as a means of exploration and discovery, and many of the works on view in these exhibitions were created during cross-country journeys. Creative experiences will include a DIY luggage tag making activity for adults, as well as a “Road Trip” themed photo booth. Live music will be provided by San Francisco’s country western band, The B-Stars. Café Too will offer specialty cocktails, beer, wine, and food (no-host bar). Admission is $5. The B-Stars is a five-piece combo that fuses country western music with rockabilly and jazz. Formed in 2005, the band began by resurrecting old honky tonk and hillbilly hits, but soon grew to produce original material reminiscent of country and western music of the 1940s and 1950s. The band has produced two full-length albums, made three appearances at Viva Las Vegas, and performed at various Spain and Montreal music festivals.
Pilgrimage comprises seventy photographs that Annie Leibovitz took on a journey through the United States and Great Britain between 2009 and 2011. Included are photographs of homes and personal possessions of iconic historical figures as well as landmarks of American history. The images vividly demonstrate Leibovitz’s curiosity with the world she inherited. Questions from the Sky comprises an installation of three videos accompanied by site-specific wall paintings and digital prints on aluminum. The installation provokes questions of how we remember those who have passed and is a meditation on the universal circle of birth, life, and death. Timelapse features Chrysopylae, a dual-screen video portrait of the Golden Gate Bridge, with footage that captures both the monumental and the ordinary moments of daily existence at the bridge. Alongside the video installation are photographs of attractions in the American West, such as Yosemite and Mount Rushmore.
