The San Jose Museum of Art seeks a seasoned fundraising professional to lead all aspects of the Museum’s development department at a time of great opportunity, given a new strategic plan and new program initiatives. SJMA is recognized for its high quality exhibitions, creative approaches to education, and commitment to audience engagement.
The Director of Development is responsible for the oversight of the Museum’s development, membership, and facility-rental programs and for the achievement of the related annual revenue goals. This position will develop and implement a comprehensive long-range plan for institutional advancement, to expand the donor base. The Director of Development will steward upper-level donor support groups and work in close collaboration with the executive director and board on cultivation and solicitation strategies.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of ten years experience; a proven track record in non-profit fundraising, donor cultivation, and grant writing; strong managerial capabilities; and excellent communication skills. Museum experience is preferred. Compensation will be consistent with the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications. Regional candidates preferred. Gallery Teacher
Job Title: Gallery Teacher
Department: Museum Experience and Education
Reports to: Manager of Youth and Family Services
Status: Part time, non-exempt. Schedule varies according to school tour requests. Monday-Friday, mornings and afternoons, 8-12 hours/week. Some weekends and evenings required.
Responsibilities:
Gallery Teachers are responsible for facilitating interactive conversations about art in a gallery setting, researching artists and artworks, leading on-site hands-on art lessons, and writing lesson plans. Gallery Teachers aim to administer inquiry-based gallery visits that offer students the opportunity to develop visual arts literacy through viewing and talking about works of art.
- Conduct inquiry-based gallery visits and activities for students in grades K-12
- Lead hands-on art activities as part of on-site programs such as 2-Part Art, and Community Days
- Participate in all exhibition training sessions, staff meetings, and continuing education sessions
- Conduct independent research on artists and artworks in Museum exhibitions and the Museum's Permanent Collection
- Design and implement grade-appropriate tours
- Perform other tasks that pertain to the responsibilities of the Museum Experience and Education Department, as assigned by the Director of Education
Qualifications:
- BA in Art History, Studio Art, Education, Museum Studies or related field. MA, MFA or M.Ed. preferred
- Minimum six months teaching experience. Studio Art or Museum Education related experience preferred
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills
- Experience working with groups of children and teachers, especially in an informal educational setting
- Experience making art and/or leading hands-on art lessons
- Basic understanding of educational theories or techniques, Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), age/grade characteristics, and/or child developmental stages
- Interest in modern and contemporary art
- Ability to work independently, with little supervision, and uphold Museum's policies
- Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese a plus
- Creativity and flexibility
- Fingerprint clearance will be required for all positions that work with K-12 school audiences

Studio Arts Educator

The Studio Arts Educator is responsible for conducting on-site and off-site Studio Art Programs and partnerships that further SJMA’s mission to engage audiences with the art of our time and the vitality of the creative process.The Studio Arts Educator is responsible for conducting on-site and off-site Studio Art Programs and partnerships that further SJMA’s mission to engage audiences with the art of our time and the vitality of the creative process.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct on-site and off-site Studio Art Programs for diverse youth and adult audiences
- Promote SJMA Studio Art Programs with local schools, agency administrators, and community leaders
- Collaborate with Education Department staff in the development and implementation of SJMA Education programs involving a studio art component
- Design and implement grade-appropriate and standards-based studio art lesson plans
- Develop Studio Art Programs that connect to current Museum exhibitions while fulfilling clients’ curricular needs and interests
- Conduct inquiry-based gallery visits and activities for students in grades K-12
- Participate in required exhibition training sessions and attend informational staff meetings
- Conduct independent research on artists and artworks in Museum exhibitions and in the Museum's Permanent Collection
- Maintain studio art supplies and organization of art materials storage areas
Minimal Qualifications:
- BFA or BA Art Education required. MA, MFA or M.Ed preferred
- A minimum of 2 years teaching experience required. Previous Museum Education experience preferred
- Experience working with groups of children and teachers, in school and informal educational settings
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills
- Basic understanding of educational theories or techniques, Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), age/grade characteristics, and/or child developmental stages
- Community contacts a plus
- Ability to work independently and in small groups
- Excellent organizational skills with accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently, with little supervision, and uphold Museum's policies
- Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese a plus
- Creativity and flexibility
Special Requirements:
- A valid California Driver’s License and reliable transportation in order to travel between school and community sites throughout the Bay Area
- Ability to work weekends and evenings as required
- Pursuant to California law, all employees of the Museum who provide schoolsite services to minors must be fingerprinted and undergo a criminal background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ). DOJ verification of a cleared criminal background check must be received by the Museum prior to the commencement of work
- Provide record of current tuberculosis test
Compensations: $23.00 - $28.00/hour DOE
